Wolf Journey Earth Conservation Courses guide you through skills of the Neighborhood Naturalist, Traditional Herbalist, Wildlife Tracker, Wilderness Survival Scout, Sustainable Citizen and Environmental Educator.
Wolf Journey online course books consist of 20 chapters, each with four core study experiences that can be completed as a series of lessons to earn a conservation certificate in your area of interest.
Wolf Journey follows scientific, observational, interactive, and often improvisational methods of learning, inspired by stories of nature. Kim & Chris Chisholm introduce every chapter with a live video, guiding you to create your own experiences at home through wonder, research, expression and documentation.

Book One: Trail of the Neighborhood Naturalist focuses on urban and rural habitat conservation on a path to become your neighborhood naturalist. Originally printed in 1998, the online version is being rolled out as we finalize each chapter. Perfect for:
- Personal Outdoor Enrichment
- Independent Study Programs
- Micro-School Learning Pods
- Homeschool Families
- Distance Learning
Book Two: Trail of the Traditional Herbalist (out of print) focuses on ethnobotany and plant conservation on your path to becoming a budding herbalist. Ethnobotany means understanding the relationships between plants and humans, how plants are incorporated into our daily lives, and how humans are dependent upon plant ecosystems. As part of this program, you’ll become an herbalist who knows how to respectfully teach the harvesting and preservation of plants for their medicinal, nutritional, and utilitarian gifts.
Book Three: Trail of the Wildlife Tracker (out of print) focuses on wildlife conservation, birding and more on your path to becoming a wildlife specialist. It’s a way to realize that in every area of outdoor study – herbalism, scouting, survival, traditional living – that “it all comes back to tracking.” If you can find it, you save the time required to make it. Whether you choose this apprenticeship focus for the purpose of wildlife research, sport, or teaching, you will be well on your way to becoming a highly valuable guide of our native fauna.
Book Four: Trail of the Survival Scout (out of print) focuses on emergency preparedness, cultural and wilderness conservation on your path to becoming a survival scout. Skills emphasize navigation, fire, shelter, wild edible foods foraging, and traditional craftwork like tanning hides for leather, making bows and fishing gear for the fall harvest, working with stone to make knives and arrowheads, and practicing survival scenarios in case of emergency. Upon completion, you will know how to harvest and teach plants, animals and minerals with skills needed to honor their gifts.
Book Five: Trail of the Sustainable Citizen (unpublished) focuses on energy conservation, self-sufficiency, permaculture and appropriate technologies.
Book Six: Trail of the Environmental Educator (available for staff and apprentices) is now available as an online policy manual for anyone wanting to run outdoor programs. The book focuses on how to build skills of naturalist training, backcountry leadership, risk management, adventure program development, and the teaching of the earth skills. It includes detailed earth skills lesson plans, as well as standardized environmental education policies and procedures. Price is negotiable depending on recipient need and resource availability.
Wolf Journey study experiences revolve around your personal “peaceful place” study site which is an interactive method of outdoor education using your own “control group” area from which to compare everything in nature. You’ll receive inspiration and instruction in each chapter of the book, then head outside to experience wonders of your peaceful place before returning to journal your experiences.
